Community is defined by the American Heritage dictionary as “A group of people living in the same locality and under the same government. b.) The district or locality in which such a group lives: a small rural community. 2. A group or class having common interests: the scientific community. 3. Similarity or identity: a community of interests.
The very idea of community has changed over the years. With so many ideas floating around about what community truly means, it can be hard to pinpoint a clear idea of what it is. For some of us our experience of community at one time or another meant unity, compassion, sharing life together, and caring for each other. Unfortunately majority of our communities have a very different idea of what a community is today.
Even with all of our present day technology It has become harder to know who lives in the neighborhood among us. The concept of having a block club is dying fast. Along with community policing, community investment clubs, healthy socializing and mingling with one another in the community, and serving one another.
What would it look like to re-think community? How can we start healing our communities or as we like to put it How can we heal the hood?
1) Start a community wide heal the hood campaign: It starts with how we choose to treat each other. All it takes is one person to start by making their own home a center for reconciling the community.
2) Devise a plan that will reconcile your block or community: If you have a computer then Google the Diane Latiker story. Here is a real life story about a woman who turned her house into a instrument for reconciling the community. Today K.O.B (Kids Off The Block) is the anchor of the community.
3) Use Technology and form partnerships with residents, organizations, faith-based groups, political figures, local business owners and professionals.
4) Start forums and workshops to create momentum in your community. Invite the entire community out to have a real dialogue full of frank and honest discussion about the issues and challenges you share in that community.
5) Understand that change must come from the inside first. Change only works when it goes from internal to external. Our mentalities, hearts, emotions, spiritual health, and ability deal with negative encounters in a positive way is vital.
These are just a few examples of what we can do to create lasting positive change within our communities. The sooner we realize that the people who don’t live among us don’t care about our condition the better. The people who deal with what you deal with, have the same shortcomings as you, and have experienced many of the same life yielding encounters as you are usually compassionate towards you.
If you can’t understand or sympathies with others why should you care? We should all recognized that we all are doing life together whether we like it or not. The sooner we understand that when we help others we are also helping ourselves the world will become a better place. If you really want to maintain your comfortable life, prosperity, wealth, and materialistic possessions peacefully the solution is simple.
Help yourself by helping others.
